Crime Maps can effectively inform members of the community, police officers and police staff with the number, rate and geographical location of defined crime types within London and particularly so at a local level. They also empower communities to hold local police and partners to account for what is happening and encourage active citizenship through enabling informed involvement at a local level. The MPS have increasingly been requested to provide this type of information as part of the Safer Neighbourhoods programme. Neighbourhood Policing research shows that people who feel well informed about what is happening in their local neighbourhood are more likely to feel more confident in local policing, and to engage and work with police and partners to prevent crime. Key benefits include: * Providing more information to communities about crime in their local area; * Providing access to advice on crime prevention and safety; * Enabling better engagement between police, public and partners; and * Encouraging and enabling citizens to actively contribute and/or be involved in making their neighbourhood safer.
